Samuel Porzungolo

NORWALK, CONN

Samuel Porzungolo of Norwalk passed away on Wednesday, May 05, 2010 in Norwalk Hospital while surrounded by his loving family. He was 87. Sam was the beloved husband of fifty-two years to Mary G. (Albanese) Porzungolo.

Born in Jersey City, New Jersey on November 07, 1922, Sam was the son of the late Angelo and Mary (Mongiello) Porzungolo and was raised in Brooklyn, NY. He served in the United States Army during WWII and upon his return, resided in Brooklyn for fifty-two years. In 1998, he relocated with his wife to Norwalk, Conn to be closer to his children.

Sam was a chef at O’Henry’s in Manhattan before opening his own restaurant, La Croce Via in Brooklyn, NY. He retired in 1984, after building and running a successful pizzeria, Pizza Plaza of Brooklyn, NY.

Sam was an avid fisherman and truly enjoyed the outdoors. He loved the sun and could be found at the beach swimming and surfcasting. His family came first, especially his loving grandchildren and will be missed by all.

Along with his wife, he is survived by two sons, Stephen and his wife, Ellen Porzungolo of Fresh Meadows, NY and Thomas and his wife, Angela Porzungolo of Elwood, NY; two daughters, Lisa and her husband, Christopher Pappas of Danbury, Conn and Marissa and her husband, Alex Privilegi of New Hyde Park, NY; eight grandchildren and a sister, Teresa Haliy of Hollywood, FL and several nieces and nephews; Preceding in death was his daughter, Janet Porzungolo who passed in 1974.

Sam’s family will receive friends on Saturday, May 08, 2010 in Norwalk’s Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 5 East Wall Street from 2:00PM – 4:00PM and 7:00PM – 9:00PM. Additionally, you may call on Sunday, May 09, 2010 in the parlor from 11:00AM – 2:00PM.

His funeral will be held on Monday, May 10, 2010 at 9:25AM from the parlor, when the funeral cortege will proceed to St. Matthew R.C. Church, 216 Scribner Avenue, Norwalk, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM. Interment will follow at 2:00PM with Full Military Honors in Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew’s R.C. Church of Norwalk or to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Connecticut Chapter, 300 Research Parkway, Suite 310, Meriden, CT 06450.
